Medical writer
For 20 years, Kathryn has worked in clinical research, firstly managing clinical trials before focusing on writing documents to support the development of new medicines and printed/online materials to help patients. In 2010 she created Cathean Ltd and provides medical writing services to businesses, academics and physicians from around the world.
Here’s what Kathryn says about how she made writing her way of life:
‘In 2005, I combined my love of horses with that of writing when I was invited to write a regular column for online equestrian magazine, Eventing Worldwide. The column described my adventures as an amateur eventrider alongside my husband Ian. I also wrote several other pieces for this website, and interviewed some of my heroes from the sport of eventing. In parallel, I was working full-time as a clinical study manager in the pharmaceutical industry. I realised my favourite aspect of this role was writing documents to support new medicine development. So, when an opportunity arose to move into medical writing, I leapt at the chance. I love what I do! I still get a thrill when a medicine is approved to treat patients, knowing that I played a tiny part in getting it out there. I’ve been privileged to work alongside such talented scientists and doctors from around the world and across a wide variety of projects. In 2010, I set up my own business, Cathean Ltd, to become a freelance medical writer. I incorporate my equestrian and creative writing ventures as niche aspects. A few years ago, I finally realised a life-long ambition of publishing my first book, Life Matters, an honest and emotional account of how I rebuilt my life following Ian’s death after a short illness. In this book, I share life lessons based on personal experiences to help others facing challenges and change. My second book, Cappuccino, Cake and Chat, incorporates a relatively new love of mine, which is writing rhyming verse - I enjoy channelling my inner Pam Ayres!’

I am passionate about writing and I understand the importance of providing concise, accurate and readable content.

With over 25 years experience of working in clinical and medicine development, I have written a variety of clinical trial, regulatory and medical communications documents across a wide range of therapeutic and medical areas. My clients include pharmaceutical companies, niche biotechnology and healthcare businesses, clinical research organisations, regulatory agencies, medical communications agencies, healthcare charities and academic institutions, across the world including the UK, Europe, the US and Japan.
